Scenarios

Inflation — the same contributions merely keeping pace with CPI would be $90,910 today, so the real (inflation-adjusted) return is +1597.1%.

Lump sum instead — $50,000 all at once in Jan 1985: $13,603,381 (+27106.8%) — lump sum came out ahead.

Worst timing — same monthly amount started at the all-time high (Jul 2026): $194.71 on $200 invested (-2.6%).

⚠ Price returns only — dividends are not included. This understates the true return of dividend-paying shares, and any comparison against crypto (which pays no dividends) is biased against equities by roughly the dividend yield, compounded.

About Aflac

Aflac Incorporated is an American insurance company and is the largest provider of supplemental insurance in the United States. It was founded in 1955 and is based in Columbus, Georgia. In the U.S., it underwrites a wide range of insurance policies, but is perhaps more known for its payroll deduction insurance coverage, which pays cash benefits when a policyholder has a covered accident or illness. The company states it "provides financial protection to more than 50 million people worldwide". (Wikipedia)

It's a listed company categorised under financials and life & health insurance, with a market cap of about $60.5B.

It rates High Risk at 2.9/5, meaning several rated factors score badly, so this carries materially more risk than a typical holding.

What pushes the score up: earnings quality (4.0/5) and sector / regulatory (4.0/5).

Scoring well: liquidity at 1.0/5.

Not yet researched: leverage / financial, concentration, governance. These are excluded from the score rather than guessed, so the real risk may be higher than what’s shown.
