What the ratings are

Every risk rating on this site is a summary of sourced facts run through fixed rules, published in full on the methodology page. Scores are never hand-set. A rating is not investment advice, not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold anything, and not an inducement to invest. Where a fact has not been sourced, the factor is left unrated and excluded rather than guessed — which means coverage varies by asset, and the “% rated” figure beside each band tells you how much of the rating is actually backed by data.

What the backtests are

Backtests are historical calculations from monthly closing prices. They exclude dividends (which understates equity returns, particularly against crypto), fees, spreads, taxes and slippage. Commodity series are continuous front-month futures prices, which are not directly investable. Past performance is not indicative of future returns — a backtest tells you what happened, not what will happen.

It is not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and nothing on it constitutes a financial promotion, personal recommendation, or any other regulated activity. Nothing here takes your circumstances into account. If you need advice, consult someone authorised to give it.

Cryptoassets specifically

Cryptoassets are high-risk and largely unregulated. If something goes wrong — an exchange fails, a token collapses, a bridge is drained — you are unlikely to have recourse to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or the Financial Ombudsman Service. Be prepared to lose everything you put in.

Data can be wrong, stale or revised by its source. Check anything that matters before acting on it.
