Scenarios
Inflation — the same contributions merely keeping pace with CPI would be $10,179 today, so the real (inflation-adjusted) return is +757.4%.
Lump sum instead — $8,900 all at once in Apr 2019: $548,724 (+6065.4%) — lump sum came out ahead.
Worst timing — same monthly amount started at the all-time high (Sep 2025): $1,226 on $1,200 invested (+2.2%).
Backtests use monthly closing prices. Stock dividends aren’t reinvested, so long-run equity returns are understated.
